DIY - Scented Sidewalk Chalk
We hope these DIYs are giving you some fun activities to do on a rainy summer day! We would love to hear which ones you are enjoying! -Katie Weber
YOU WILL NEED:
-1 empty deodorant container for each color desired
-Optional: a few lip balm dispensers if you prefer to make smaller chalk
-1 Tbsp. petroleum jelly (per deodorant container)
-1 disposable cup and plastic fork per color. (Plaster of paris gets really hard so it's nice to be able to throw away the disposable cup & utensil.)
-1/4 cup cold water
-5–10 drops essential oil (per container)
-Food coloring
-1/2 cup plaster of paris (per deodorant container)
INSTRUCTIONS:
Coat the inside of each deodorant container thoroughly with petroleum jelly. Use more than you think - about 1 Tbsp. per container container.
Pour cold water into a disposable cup, add the food coloring and essential oils. Note: My kids like to match the color of the chalk with the oil (ie. yellow with lemon, green with lime or stress away, etc)
Wear a mask for this step and do this outside in a well-ventilated area. Using a spoon, very gently scoop out 1/2 cup of plaster of Paris and add to the cold water solution. *(Be careful not to inhale any dust.) *
Note: Once the plaster of paris and cold water mix, it will get hot, so wait to touch until it hardens.
Using a plastic fork, stir the mixture until it is well combined and the color is mixed.
Pour the chalk mixture into the deodorant container until just below the lip.
Let sit at room temperature for at least 4 hours to harden completely.
Once hardened, squeeze the sides of the container to help loosen the chalk. Once the chalk is loosened, it should be easy to twist up and down like you normally would.
To use, twist up and get creative!
