How to Have a Hygge Home this Winter

Have you heard of Hygge? (It’s pronounced “hoo-ga,” though I always want to say “hig-ee.” That’s totally wrong.) It’s a Danish word to describe coziness – though it’s thought to be more about feeling and atmosphere than just a single descriptive word. It’s curling up by a fire in your favorite blanket, feeling the warmth of your favorite cup of hot tea, laughing with new friends – creating a haven in your home. Here are some tips for adding hygge to your winter.

  • Turn your diffuser light settings to candle flicker mode or to soft golden shades of yellow or orange. Or light a DIY candle infused with essential oils. These soft light sources promote calm and peace. Diffuse calming blends like Lavender + Northern Lights Black Spruce, or warm, welcoming blends like Orange + Nutmeg + Cinnamon.

  • Make your favorite hot beverage. There’s just something about holding a mug as the warmth from the mug in your hand starts to bring the coziness from the inside out. Fill your cup with wassail, lavender hot chocolate, or a chai latte.

  • Stock your living spaces with warm blankets – at the foot of the bed, over the back of a chair, overflowing in a basket near the couch. Keep them easily accessible, and be sure they’re soft for promoting all the hygge snuggles during movie night or while curling up with your favorite book.

  • Invite people in. Sometimes the cold weather causes us to retreat or hibernate a bit – and that’s completely okay! But don’t forget to gather some friends around your table. Host a simple meal with soup and sandwiches, or invite some other mamas over for coffee after school drop-off.

Do you have any hygge tips? We’d love to hear how you’re creating cozy, peaceful spaces this winter!
